I Decided to Clean for Twenty Minutes

I used to wait for the “right day” to clean.

Like a Saturday when I had energy.
Or a day when no one was home.
But that day almost never came.

So I tried something different.

I started a 20 minute cleaning routine.

I told myself I would clean for twenty minutes.
That was it.

Not the whole house.
Not even a whole room.

Just twenty minutes.

How My 20 Minute Cleaning Routine Started

The first day, I cleaned one drawer in the kitchen.
It was messy.
I threw some things away.
I put a few things back where they belonged.
When the timer went off, I stopped.

It was not perfect.
But it was done.

The next day, I wiped down the counter.
The day after that, I folded laundry that had been sitting for two days.
Some days I did not feel like doing it.
But twenty minutes did not feel too big.

What Changed Over Time

It did not change everything at once.

My house did not suddenly look like a magazine.
There were still toys on the floor.
There were still papers on the table.

But something small changed.

I did not feel as stressed when I walked into the kitchen.
I was not as annoyed when I opened a drawer.
There were fewer piles.

Some days I skipped it.
Some days I only did ten minutes.
But most days, I tried to come back to my 20 minute cleaning routine.

Why I Still Use This Cleaning Routine

Now when things start to pile up again, I do not panic.
I just set the timer.

Twenty minutes.

It is not impressive.
But it keeps things from getting worse.

And for now, that feels good enough.

I did not plan to change my whole house.
I just did not want to feel overwhelmed anymore.
A 20 minute cleaning routine was something I could handle.

not overnight, but over time.

Compound days
